ABOUT FAIR TRADE

About Fair Trade
Image 1

Fair Trade is an alternative approach to conventional international trade. It is a trading partnership which aims at sustainable development for excluded and disadvantaged producers. It seeks to do this by providing better trading conditions, by awareness raising and by campaigning.

All Fair Trade accepts:
- paying fair prices to producers which reflect the true cost of production...world market prices often do not cover even the raw materials
- supporting producer organisations in their social and environmental projects, such as developing health facilities and education
- promoting gender equality in pay and working conditions to change the traditional low postion of women in society
- advising on product development to increase access to markets
- committing to long term relationships to provide stability and security
- campaigning to highlight the unequal system of world trade which places profit above human rights and threatens our environment

Fair Trade is not just about trading, but is also about changing the unfair structure of world trade and so building a fairer society. Fair Trade is a sustainable way to Make Poverty History.

Why Fair Trade ?

Here at Motleys Fair Trade it's because we care about the workers making our clothing and gift lines and we also care about the world we live in.

We are now members of BAFTS and all of our suppliers are BAFTS registered (british associaition of fair trade shops) so we know that this ensures a genuine fair trade product where the suppliers are comitted to providing safe clean working conditions, men and women are paid equally, a fair price is paid and many include health and pension schemes and very importantly no child labour is used. Some are also members of IFAT ( the home of the fair trade organization mark)

Environmental Issues
Waste fabric from some of the garments is recycled to make bags and rugs. We also have garments which are made from recycled fabric. Suppliers are also striving to change the dyes used , most of them now use AZO FREE dye. Some of our ranges use vegetable based dyes
All wooden items are made from substainable forests and many smaller items are made from recyling offcuts. In our retail shop we have some beautiful ducks made from recycled teak and bamboo roots!!

Natural Vegetable Dyes
• Environmental choice in dying and therefore environment friendly. Makes use of natural materials that are easily obtainable in the producers environment. Fuel costs are reduced and time is saved by having necessary ingredients available close by.
• Non-Toxic & non allergic hazard free for skin.
• Colours are long lasting and have good resistance to moth attacks
